What is Brainspotting?

Despite it's somewhat ridiculous name, 'Brainspotting' is a cutting-edge therapeutic method that leverages the connection between eye positions and stored emotional experiences to facilitate deep, organic healing.

Discovered and initially studied and developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, this natural approach to brain-based emotional healing uses the fact that specific eye positions, or "brainspots," appear to correlate with unprocessed traumas or emotional experiences in the brain.

A trained Brainspotting therapist, by helping their clients to identify and utilize these eye positions, can help their therapy clients better access and process through (and out!) their deeply rooted emotional pain, leading to relief and recovery that tends to be faster, more comprehensive, and superior in results relative to talk-based therapy, alone.

Don't Just Take Our Word for It!

We get it—Brainspotting sounds like something out of a sci-fi thriller; but in reality, it’s a deeply effective therapy that helps people process trauma, anxiety, and emotional baggage in ways that traditional talk therapy alone sometimes just can’t.

Now, we wish we could share glowing testimonials from our own clients—but local standards of practice for professional psychotherapy don’t allow it (ethical guidelines and all that). So, we’ve done the next best thing: we’ve curated real, verifiable testimonials from people across the web who’ve experienced the magic of Brainspotting firsthand.

From feeling “more tranquil than I have in a very long time” to finally shaking off years of stress and self-doubt, these stories highlight just how powerful this therapy can be.

If you’ve been stuck in the same cycle and are ready to move forward, this might just be the game-changer you didn’t know you needed. Read on, get inspired, and—when you’re ready—book a session to see for yourself.

I have got to leave the world better than I’ve found it, and right now, brainspotting is the best I’ve found for healing.

After my Brainspotting session, I felt exhausted and spent, but also at peace. The physical issues related to my anxiety never returned. As Dr. David Grand says, 'Brainspotting is a physiological therapy with psychological consequences.

That was amazing.

I feel so calm.

I had no idea I could feel this way.

Smiling long-haired man

Maté has shared his own experience with Brainspotting, stating that after one session, he was able to "relax the grip of a burdensome perspective and its associated emotions, both of which I had carried for a long time"

DR. DAVID GRAND, Discoverer of Brainspotting

Brainspotting allows us to harness the brain's natural ability for self-scanning, so we can activate, locate, and process the sources of trauma and distress in the body.

After only two treatments, I feel more tranquil than I have felt in a very long time.

This therapy, with its unique approach to accessing the brain's self-healing pathways, offered me not just recovery but a renewed sense of empowerment over my own life.

Brainspotting is extremely effective, and in my opinion, far more so than any other kind of therapy.

How Does Brainspotting Work?

In a Brainspotting session at Limestone Clinic Kingston Counselling & Psychotherapy, our trained therapists guide clients to discover eye positions that correlate with unresolved emotional experiences. This process involves:

1. Identification of Brainspots

Through guided eye movements, clients identify specific points in their visual field that trigger emotional responses.

2. Focused Mindfulness

Clients maintain focus on the identified brainspot while observing their internal experiences, allowing for deeper processing.

3. 'Squeezing the Lemons'

Clients and therapists continue processing until the activation that had been targeted in the brainspotting sessions feels to the client to have resolved. Then, just for giggles, they try extra hard to see if there's any more juice in 'life's lemons' to make sure to get a very thorough result.

All of this occurs against a backdrop of expert therapist attunement to their client needs and experiences based on years of experiences and focussed study in the fine art of brainspotting.

Our therapists provide a supportive and attuned presence, facilitating a brave environment for processing and healing some of life's hard stuff.
